This week on Foodie, Kyle samples chili at the 12th Rockabilly Chili Fundraiser and we go into the kitchen with two of competition’s chefs.

There is no better event for a Wisconsin winter than a chili contest!  On this week’s episode, we go behind the counter to learn about the Rockabilly Chili contest and what makes a great chili.  Follow us to see what two first-time contest chefs are making.

First, we visit the Fire Academy’s kitchen where Fire Lieutenant and Director of Community Relations Schuyler Belott is preparing for his first Rockabilly Chili contest.  We learn about the cooking culture in the fire houses while he makes us his Chicken Verde Chili.   There is some friendly but heated competition between the fire houses and we’re not just referring to the chili!  Mark Borchardt is among the judges that will decide who gets the coveted title and who goes home with the last place “Leaky Hose”.  All proceeds from the Fire House Competition go to Coats for Kids.

Next, we visit the reigning vegetarian chili champ,  Riverwest Coop Cafe.  Entering their recipe for the first time, Gina Devecchis and her team are cooking The Bloody Bean, a Bloody Mary inspired chili.  You can eat your vegetables and drink them too!  They incorporated the spicy kick of the bloody mary into the chili by actually adding the Public Houses’s bloody mary recipe and adding 5 types of peppers.  It is topped off with garnishes just like it should be.

Kyle takes us on a tour of the competition where you can try over 50 different types of chili from restaurants all over the Milwaukee area.  The WMSE Rockabilly Chili Fundraiser is in its 12th year and has grown from a couple hundred to over a few thousand attendees.  Keep watching to see who wins and how much chili Kyle can eat!
